Prior to the Handover of Hong Kong, the Training Depot Brigade of Gurkhas (TDBG) in Sek Kong, where new Gurkha recruits were given their rigorous basic training, was closed down and reconstituted as the Gurkha Training Wing (GTW) in Church Crookham, Hampshire, in the United Kingdom. Gurkhas and their families settled in and around the area and there is a large Gurkha community in the nearby town of Fleet. Later, in 1999, the GTW moved to Helles Barracks at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire and became Gurkha Company, 3rd Battalion, Infantry Training Centre (ITC).
