On the 30th May 2008 the new Constituent Assembly abolished the Nepali monarchy, ending 240 years of rule by the Shah dynasty (and perhaps fulfilling the 200 hundred year old curse made by Guru Gorkhnath). The former and highly unpopular king, Gyanendra, was forced to leave the Royal Palace, which has been turned into a national museum, and he now lives as a private citizen. Thus the Shahs' dreams of a 'Gorkha Raj', a Nepali Empire, came to an end nearly two and a half centuries after the Fall of Kathmandu in 1768.
